Oral Findings in Systemic Diseases

Oral health is in close relation with overall health. Several acute or chronic systemic conditions that was not previously diagnosed may present with findings in the oral cavity. These findings can be helpful in the diagnosis of the underlying disorder. As well, pathological processes observed in the oral cavity and contiguous structures could also have a direct or indirect impact on the patient’s overall systemic condition. Therefore, regular dental check-ups and monitoring oral symptoms can contribute to the early detection and management of such systemic diseases and are crucial for comprehensive healthcare. Monitoring of the oral health should include evaluation for mucosal changes, periodontal inflammation and bleeding, and general condition of the teeth. In this review, general characteristics of selected systemic diseases that manifest in or impact orofacial region will be presented. In addition, the clinical and radiological findings of these systemic conditions in the oral cavity will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the clinical manifestations of the systemic diseases in the oral mucosa
  2. Identify the clinical and radiological manifestations of the systemic diseases in the dental and the periodontal tissues
  3. Understand that regular examination of the oral cavity may reveal findings suggestive of an underlying systemic condition and allow for early diagnosis
