Individualized periodontal healthcare: An update, actionable approaches and practical tips
Periodontal diseases are major global health burdens with profound socioeconomic impacts. Periodontitis markedly affects oral health, general wellbeing, healthy aging and quality of life. Indeed, the FDI Global Periodontal Health Project has enhanced global awareness of periodontal healthcare in both professional and public communities. Scientific evidence shows that individual’s risk for the development of periodontal diseases varies extensively. Currently, a notable challenge is how to maximize the effectiveness of periodontal healthcare in daily practice and public health campaigns. The emerging personalized medicine/periodontics paradigms have inspired the medical/dental professionals to develop new strategic frameworks for promoting precise and cost-effective health interventions. This lecture i) addresses the scientific rationale of personalized periodontics in line the current classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases; ii) deliberates the key issues of precision periodontal healthcare; and iii) shares actionable approaches to implementing individualized periodontal healthcare and proactive prevention for optimal oral/periodontal health and general health.

Periodontal care for general health and wellbeing
Scientific updates, practical implications and perspectives
What healthcare professionals could reflect on the fact about billions of human mouths well covered by face masks in the 3-year COVID-19 pandemic? Oral health is the core for everyone’s health, functionality, wellbeing, quality of life and healthy aging. Indeed, periodontal diseases intrinsically connect to various systemic comorbidities, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, cognitive impairment and lately the COVID-19, reflecting WHO’s latest resolution on “Oral Health” strengthening ‘poor oral health is a major contributor to general health conditions’. Our recent findings further reveal that periodontal condition may reflect individual susceptibility to systemic comorbidities within a line of disease network. This lecture i) highlights the scientific updates on the inextricable link of periodontal-systemic diseases, impacts of periodontal intervention and the underlying mechanistic pathways; ii) elaborates the relevant clinical implications and practical approaches; and iii) addresses the proactive perspectives for achieving optimal health through the integrative teamwork of dental and medical professionals.
