Smile Design: The Role and Limits of Orthodontic Treatment in The Interdisciplinary Team

Smile architect of 'micro-mini-macro aesthetics'

Nowadays there has been a paradigm in dentistry, 'smile design'. The patients do not seek just healthy and proper aligned teeth, but beautiful custom-made smiles. Consequently, to keep up with this change, the conventional concept of orthodontic therapy that has been mainly based on the ideal occlusion and cephalometric values has been modified to a new concept based essentially on soft tissues and aesthetics. In this concept by combining orthodontics with other dental disciplines, the treatment planning is not limited to the teeth but the balance and the proportions among the entire facial structures. This interdisciplinary approach provides the synergism of each discipline's specialized field into a comprehensive therapy that ensures optimal patient care. The compounding effect of the successive therapies lets each provider build upon and enhance the previous provider's results.
In this lecture many complex cases will be presented that have been treated with the 'micro-mini-macro aesthetics' approach by the interdisciplinary team.

Learning Objectives
Understanding the orthodontic goals and tooth movements that can be achieved to obtain the ideal smile that ultimately leads to the optimum aesthetic outcomes.

Demonstrate how to identify and incorporate specific smile design principles into the diagnostic and treatment phases of smile design cases that require interdisciplinary approach.

Understanding that the interdisciplinary treatment should aim to include dental and facial aesthetics, periodontal health, stable condyle–fossa relationship, optimum functional occlusion, a stable result, and satisfaction of the patient's chief complaint.
