Oral Cryotherapy: A Feasible Way to Control Postoperative Endodontic Pain Applications of Cryotherapy in Endodontics

Due to its multifactorial nature and high prevalence, endodontic pain remains a cornerstone topic in endodontics. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods have been recommended, particularly for the control of postoperative endodontic pain. Cryotherapy has emerged as a non-toxic, practical and safe method for controlling interappointment and postoperative endodontic pain. While commonly used in surgery to reduce pain and swelling in the operation field and to alleviate the pain from oral mucositis, cryotherapy in endodontics are relatively new. To decrease or eliminate postoperative pain, intracanal, intraoral and extraoral cryotherapy have been tested in numerous clinical trials and highly recommended. Additionally, novel concepts such as vital pulp cryotherapy align with the latest trends in minimally invasive endodontics. Intraoral cryotherapy also shows promise as a technique to enhance the success of local anaesthesia. This presentation will explore the fundamental effects of cold on periradicular tissues and the application of cryotherapy in endodontics, considering recent techniques and evidence-based literature.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the biological effects of cryotherapy on periradicular tissues
  2. Grasp the concept of cryotherapy in pulpectomy and pulpotomy procedures
  3. Familiarize with the techniques for intracanal and intraoral cryotherapy in different stages of root canal treatment
  4. Learn how to incorporate this strategy in their day to day practice
