Effects of Digital Facebows on Occlusal Records
Facebows are dental tools used on diagnostic or study casts made for examination in the laboratory. They help positioning upper and lower casts on the articulators. The use of facebows in prosthetic applications is extremely important, but it has been proven that they do not increase the clinical success of complete dentures. There is insufficient scientific evidence for fixed prosthetic treatments. In recent clinical studies that we have conducted on standard anatomical sized individuals, it has been observed that the facebow makes no difference in occlusal contacts and occlusal paths when eccentric movements or vertical dimensional changes are made in the laboratory. This presentation will explain the basic rules of facebow use and in which clinical situations conventional or virtual applications can be used.
