Obtaining his bachelor’s degree in dentistry from the Nihon University in Japan in 1994, Dr Hiroshi Ogawa also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health Dentistry from the University of Sydney in Australia. In addition, he earned his doctorate in Preventive Dentistry from the Niigata University in Japan. Dr Ogawa has been the Head and Professor at the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Niigata University, as well as holding various positions at the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2003. He currently serves as the head of WHO Collaborating Centre for Translation of Oral Health Sciences, Niigata University and as a member of the WHO Clinical Consortium on Healthy Aging. Dr Ogawa has also been a member of the council at the World Dental Federation (FDI) since 2023.
FDI Tobacco Cessation Project
FDI has developed a recommendation for dental professionals to help their patients modify their behavior and cease tobacco use, such as “Tobacco cessation guidance for oral health professionals”, coupled with educational animated videos, and a fact sheet “The Effects of E-cigarette on Oral Health”. FDI policy statement has also been developed on “the role of oral health practitioners in tobacco cessation”. Since then, dissemination strategies and capacity building workshops on tobacco cessation have been developed in more than 10 countries.
In this presentation, we will review the progress during the years and share the success cases in the countries.
