A contemporary overview of the relationship between periodontics and prosthodontics.
Of all the disciplines in modern dentistry, periodontology and prosthodontics are described as the two disciplines that have the closest relationship in practice. While periodontal status plays a key role in the long-term success of restoration abutments and aesthetics, it is well known that the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the periodontium can potentially be affected by prosthodontic factors related to the planning, design, fabrication, delivery, and maintenance of tooth- or implant-supported fixed restorations. While it is important to restore the patient's comfort, lost function, health, and aesthetics in prosthetic treatment, it is equally important not to damage the periodontal structures. Therefore, in order to achieve a successful treatment result, prosthodontics and periodontology specialists should work collaboratively to improve the quality of life of patients as well as the long-term success of the restoration and maintenance of periodontal health.
In this presentation, the areas related to implant or dental-supported fixed restorations and periodontal structures will be outlined in order to achieve predictable treatment results.
